Now 56, Amy is a mom, an artist and a human rights advocate but she’s rarely in the spotlight today after living out her youth and young adulthood in front of the media. In addition to Amy, the former president and first lady also have three sons—John William “Jack” Carter, 76, James Earl “Chip” Carter III, 73 and Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter, 71. Jeff and his wife, Annette, met at Georgia Southwestern University. They married in 1975 during Carter’s presidential campaign and lived in the White House for the first years of their marriage. Their son Jason James, born in 1975, was a toddler when Carter took office in 1977. They eventually divorced, and he married Elizabeth Brasfield in 1992, gaining two stepchildren.
She later received a master’s degree from Tulane in art history and wed computer consultant James Wentzel in 1996. At her wedding ceremony she was not given away, saying she did not belong to anyone, People magazine reported. He has been married three times and has a son, James Carter IV, and a daughter, Margaret Alicia Carter.
According to Business Insider, John Joseph Kelly goes by John Joseph “Jay” Kelly. Little is known about him or their marriage as Amy as attempted to keep out of the public spotlight following her years of activism. He has been photographed at memorial events for his late father-in-law in a wheelchair, though the reason for the wheelchair isn’t known. They would marry four years later in 1975 and have three sons, Joshua Jeffrey, Jeremy Davis, and James Carlton.
The 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, died nearly two weeks ago at 100 years old. His national funeral is Thursday, Jan. 9, at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Amy worked with her dad on the 1995 children’s book “The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer,” which Jimmy wrote and she illustrated, about a boy who befriends a monster. She remains a board member of The Carter Center, but she has otherwise stayed out of public life. Amy became a political activist in the ’80s and ’90s, and she was even arrested at a CIA recruitment protest, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The couple divorced in 2005, and since 2007 she has been married to John Joseph “Jay” Kelly, with whom she shares Errol Carter Kelly. Jeff’s son Josh revealed that his father has been living with Parkinson’s for “some time.” While not much is known about when Jeff was diagnosed, his son revealed he moved into a new home a decade ago. While living with his parents in the White House during his father’s presidency, Chip smoked cannabis with country star Willie Nelson — a close friend of the former president — on the White House roof. The couple would have their second son on April 12, 1950, in Honolulu, where Jimmy was stationed during his naval service. Like his brother, he worked in the family’s peanut warehouse before being elected to the Plains City Council and working on the Democratic National Committee.
